MORE FROM THIS LESSON:
POINT #1 – JESUS WANTS FELLOWSHIP WITH US
POINT #2 – AS A CHRISTIAN, YOU ALWAYS HAVE THE PRESENCE OF GOD
________________________________________________________________
POINT #3 – YOU CAN BE CLOSER TO GOD IF YOU WANT TO BE
Can we be someone’s friend if they don’t want to be our friend? (allow your child to answer: NO) Usually, when we are friends with someone, they are also friends with us. We both have to want to be friends with each other right? Do you know that Jesus wants to be close to us and that He wants to be our friend? (allow your child to answer: YES!) We have to be willing and want to be His friend also. (Ask:) Who are some of your friends here on earth? (allow your child to answer) How did you become friends? (Allow your child to answer) What are some things you like to do with your friends? (Allow your child to answer)
There are things we have to do on our part to become close to God, to be His friend, to get to know Him. Isaiah 55:6 (ESV) says, “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near.” What does the word SEEK mean? (Allow your child to answer: to try to find or search for.) Think about the game Hide-and-Seek. One person goes to hide and the other person SEEKS, or tries to find the other person. That person that hides doesn’t really go far away, they are still near or close by, but they are just hidden to where you can’t see them. It’s kind of the same way with Jesus and the Holy Spirit. He’s here but we have to find Him. How do we SEEK God? (Allow your child to answer: spend time talking to Him in prayer; reading the Bible which is His word; learning about Him from a parent, grandparent, teacher, etc.; praise Him and worship Him).
Many people in the Bible looked for God and found Him. Moses cried out to God, “I want to see Your glory!” He wanted to know all about God, about His character and who He was. Moses became a close friend to God. King David loved to be in God’s presence. He loved to spend time with God. He writes about that many times in the Bible. He would go and be alone to seek God. Abraham was the same way. He had a very close relationship with God. All of these people were friends with God. The disciple John was a very close friend to Jesus when He was here on the earth. He was one of the first disciples Jesus called on to follow Him. He called himself, the one whom Jesus loved.
Jesus wants to be our friend. He wants us to be friends with God, too. Jesus wants us to seek Him, to look for Him and find Him, while He may be found. He wants us to find Him and He wants to send His Holy Spirit to live inside of us. He wants to be our friend forever. There is coming a day when Jesus will return to the earth and it will then be too late to find Him, because He’ll already be here. We have to find Him and His Holy Spirit NOW. Jesus will never push us away. The bible says, if we draw close to Him, He will draw close to us. If we want to be closer to Jesus, we can! We can be so close that we can hear every word He says to us. We can know His thoughts, what’s on His heart and mind. Just like sometimes we know what our friend is thinking. It’s the same way with Jesus. We can be friends with Jesus.
Discussion Questions
- Can we become closer to God after we ask Jesus to come live in our hearts? How?
- Do you want to be closer to God?
- What are you doing in your relationship with Jesus to be closer to Him?
- Is there something you want to start doing or do more of to be closer to Him?
Prayer
Jesus, we are so thankful for you. We are thankful to know that you love us so much and you want to be our friend. We want to be close to you. We want to know your heart and what you are thinking. We want to find You and find out more about You, who You are, about Your character, about Your love for us, about who You say we are. We want to always be seeking You. We want to find you. Jesus, we ask You to reveal Yourself to us more and more, as we seek you more and more. We pray all of these things in the name of Jesus, amen.
