POINT #1 – JESUS WANTS FELLOWSHIP WITH US

Have you ever heard the word FELLOWSHIP?  What do you think the word FELLOWSHIP means? (Allow your child to answer: to have friendly relationships with people) Jesus wants to FELLOWSHIP with us.  Jesus wants to spend time with us.  During this time in our life right now we aren’t able to be with our friends and fellowship like we normally would – at church, at school, playing sports, etc.  But, you know who we can always fellowship with, any time, every day?  JESUS!

In the time that Jesus lived on the earth, there were religious leaders that didn’t like to, and would not, be around certain people.  Those leaders would not be around or spend time with tax collectors, sinners and even some very sick and hurt people.  But… Jesus did.  Jesus was not afraid to be around them and spend time with them.  In fact, He WANTED to!

One of Jesus’s friends and disciples was a tax collector before meeting Jesus.  His name was Matthew.  Jesus called Matthew to come follow Him.  Jesus went to Matthew’s house and ate with many tax collectors.  Jesus called a short man, named Zaccheaus, down from a tree, and told him that He was going to eat at his house.  Jesus was willing to get close to people.  Jesus’s presence changed their lives.

One time, Jesus healed a man that could not hear and could not speak.  Jesus put His fingers in the man’s ears and then spit on His fingers and put His fingers on the man’s tongue.  (Mark 7:33-35)  Jesus was not afraid to touch people that were sick.  Just like doctors, they are not afraid to take care of people that are sick.  Especially right now, doctors and nurses are so busy taking care of many people that are sick.  Just like Jesus, they are not afraid to get close to people to help them get better and heal.

Jesus told His disciples, “For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” (Luke 19:10 NLT)  Jesus was telling His disciples that He came from Heaven to live on earth, so He could go out and search for and save people who are lost.  Jesus knows that people need Him and need to know Him and fellowship with Him.  People need to be forgiven of their sin.  People need to be healed of sickness and disease.  People need to be set free from evil and darkness.  People need to know God and how much He loves them.

Revelation 3:20 (NLT) tells us, “Look!  I stand at the door and knock.  If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.”  Jesus knocks on the doors of our hearts because He wants to come into our hearts.  He wants to live there.  He wants to fellowship with us.  He wants us to know Him.  He wants to be our friend.  Maybe you have lots of friends, or maybe just a few, or maybe a BEST friend.  One friend you will always have, for sure, is Jesus.

Discussion Questions

  1. Who do you like to FELLOWSHIP and spend time with?
  2. Why do you like to spend time with that person(s) and what do you do when you spend time with them?
  3. Do you like to spend time with Jesus?
  4. What do you like about spending time with Jesus? (Maybe…talking to Him and hearing what He says back to you?  Praising and worshipping Him?  Seeing the pictures He shows you in your mind and dreaming with Him?)

Scripture Memory Verse

“For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” Luke 19:10 (NLT)

Prayer

Jesus, we are so thankful that you want to FELLOWSHIP with us.  That you want to spend time with us – listening to us, talking to us, showing us things, giving us dreams and visions, loving us, comforting us, leading us in the right way, healing our heart and our hurts and our sickness.  We are so thankful that you want to be our friend.  Holy Spirit, we ask you to help us make special time in our day, every day, to fellowship with Jesus.  Jesus, we want you to be our BEST friend.  We open our hearts to you and we declare that our hearts will always be open to you.  We pray all of this in your name Jesus, amen.

Application/Activity

As a family, discuss and talk about times that you fellowship with Jesus.  When do you do that?  What time of day?  How often do you fellowship with Him?  Share some impactful, important moments you have had while spending time in fellowship with Jesus.

Maybe your time with Him has not been what you want it to be.  Talk about how you (all) can take steps to make your fellowship time with Jesus all that you want it to be.
