What Happens When Following Jesus Gets Hard?

What do you do when resistance comes and following Jesus no longer feels easy?

In Stay Strong! Endure! – Justin Younger challenges believers to examine whether the Word of God has taken deep enough root in their hearts to withstand hardship, pressure, and opposition. Teaching from Mark 4, he focuses on the seed that falls on stony ground. These are people who receive the Word with gladness, but when tribulation or persecution comes because of the Word, they stumble because they have no deep root.

That warning matters for every follower of Jesus. It is possible to hear God’s Word, agree with it, feel encouraged by it, and still struggle to remain faithful when life becomes difficult. To endure in faith, we need more than a moment of inspiration. We need the truth of God rooted deeply enough in us that it shapes how we respond when pressure comes.

Expect Resistance as You Follow Jesus

Jesus never promised His followers a life without hardship. In John 15, He tells His disciples that if the world hated and persecuted Him, they should expect resistance too. Following Jesus means moving in a direction that will not always line up with the values of the world.

That perspective changes the way we understand difficult seasons. Resistance does not automatically mean we have done something wrong or that God has abandoned us. Sometimes opposition comes precisely because we are choosing to follow Jesus faithfully.

Justin reminds us that the enemy is not simply trying to make life uncomfortable. He wants to interfere with what God has planted inside us. His goal is to keep the Word from taking root and bearing fruit in our lives.

Recognize the Spiritual Battle

Scripture teaches that our battle is not against flesh and blood. That means people are not the true enemy, even when opposition comes through relationships, rejection, betrayal, or pressure.

Ephesians 6 describes the spiritual battle believers face and explains why God gives us spiritual armor. Paul also tells Timothy to “endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”

To endure in faith, we cannot depend only on our own strength. Jesus has already defeated death, hell, and the grave, and the Holy Spirit gives us strength to continue standing when we feel tired, discouraged, or overwhelmed.

Count the Cost of Following Jesus

Jesus makes the cost of discipleship clear in Luke 14. He calls His followers to bear their cross, count the cost, and be willing to surrender everything to follow Him.

Salvation is a free gift, but discipleship requires surrender. Following Jesus may affect our comfort, relationships, priorities, reputation, plans, and desires. A faith that lasts cannot simply begin well. It must be prepared to continue when obedience becomes costly.

The question becomes personal: Will we continue following Jesus when doing so costs us something?

Stay Strong and Endure in Faith

When resistance comes, we do not have to back down. Scripture calls us to resist the devil, draw near to God, hold fast to our confession of faith, and keep going.

Justin’s encouragement is clear: “Stay strong. Don’t back down. Hold fast to your confession of faith. Believe God.”

If you are walking through hardship, disappointment, fear, opposition, or a season where you feel like quitting, Stay Strong! Endure! will challenge you to look beyond what you see in the natural and strengthen what God is building inside you. Draw near to Him. Let His Word take root. Refuse to let resistance determine the outcome of your faith.
