POINT #3 – 5 “W’s” – WHY (and HOW)

Lastly, we are going to answer WHY Caleb believed the Israelites should overcome and take the land, and why WE can overcome as well.

In Numbers 13, verse 30 (NKJV) the scripture says, “Then Caleb quieted the people before  Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”  In this sentence, did you hear what the WHY answer is? (we are well able)  It says, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for, or because….WE ARE WELL ABLE to overcome.  The word FOR also means BECAUSE.  So, Caleb was saying, we can do this BECAUSE we are well able.  Well able means we have enough power, resources, skill, freedom and opportunity to do something.  Caleb believed they had enough POWER to OVERCOME the giants and take the land, just as God had said.  Later on in the Bible, in Deuteronomy 31:7-8 (ERV), Moses is making Joshua the new leader and the Bible says, “The Moses called Joshua.  All the Israelites watched while Moses said to Joshua, “Be strong and brave.  You will lead these people into the land that the Lord promised to give their ancestors.  You will help the Israelites take the land and divide it among them.  The Lord will lead you.  He himself is with you.  He will not fail you or leave you.  Don’t worry.  Don’t be afraid!”  God promised to be with Joshua and the Israelites and He promises to be with us also.  We MUST know that we are WELL ABLE to overcome because He is WITH us!  Our God, Jesus, who is with us always and never leaves us and lives inside of us, is GREATER than any opposition, or ANYTHING that comes against us.  In the book of John, Jesus tells us that He will ask that a HELPER come to be WITH us FOREVER.  That HELPER is the HOLY SPIRIT.  He tells us that we KNOW who He is because He lives WITH us and will be IN us.  God lives IN us!  How awesome is that?!

There’s one question that we didn’t answer.  We answered all of the “W” questions.  Do you know which one we didn’t answer?  (HOW)  Right!  We didn’t answer the HOW question.  Sometimes we won’t know the HOW, and sometimes because we don’t know the HOW, it can cause us to not do what God asks us to do, WHEN He asks us to do it.  We can’t FOCUS on the HOW.  We can’t wait to always know everything and every detail of HOW we are going to overcome something.  We have to just do what we know God wants us to do and believe and trust Him and have faith in Him.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Do you ever feel like you aren’t strong enough or powerful enough to overcome or beat something?
    1. Maybe forgiving someone, overcoming fear, being nice to someone that is mean to you?
  2. Do you believe that WITH GOD you can do those things?
  3. DO you believe that WITH GOD you can do ALL things?  Even the hardest things you can think of?  What are those things?  What is something you think you can’t do right now?
  4. Do you believe that if you ask Jesus to be your Lord and Savior that He gives you the HOLY SPIRIT and the POWER of God to live inside of you?
  5. What is something hard that God has given you the strength and power to overcome?

Scripture Memory Verse:

“But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God, all things are possible.”  – Mark 10:27 NKJV

Prayer :

Jesus, we are so thankful that you have sent a Helper, the Holy Spirit to live WITH us and IN us when we ask you to come into our heart and when we ask you to be our Savior and the Lord of our life.  We thank you for the overcoming POWER that the Holy Spirit brings to us for us to use to defeat and overcome those things that come against us.  We thank you that you promise to ALWAYS be WITH us and IN us.  Help us to always remember and never forget those promises.  Especially, when we are trying to overcome something really hard and when we get “down” and don’t think we can do it.  Help us to remember your words and your truths and your promises, which are always yes and amen, through Jesus Christ.  Jesus, it’s in your MIGHTY, POWERFUL name that we pray, amen.
