POINT #3 –

GOD WILL NEVER TEMPT YOU & HE WILL PROVIDE A WAY OUT OF TEMPTATION

We’ve talked about temptation and sin.  Where does temptation come from?  Who tempts us?  (Allow your child to answer: the enemy, satan, devil, etc)  Does God ever tempt us?  (Allow your child to answer: NO.  The Bible says in James 1:13 that God does not and will never tempt us.)  Can you remember what the difference is between SIN and TEMPTATION?  (Allow your child to answer: TEMPTATION is the thought or desire we have to sin.  SIN is the action of doing that thought.)  Why do you think the enemy tempts us?  (Allow your child to answer: He wants to separate us from God.  He doesn’t want us to be close to God or to be free of sin.)  We know that all of us face temptation.  Remember, 1 Corinthians 10:13 (ERV) tells us, “The only temptations that you have are the same temptations that all people have. But you can trust God. He will not let you be tempted more than you can bear. But when you are tempted, God will also give you a way to escape that temptation. Then you will be able to endure it.”

What is our ESCAPE from temptation?  (Allow your child to answer…)  Here are two things we need to know about our escape from temptation: 1) Jesus tells us to pray so that we will not ENTER INTO temptation.  When we ENTER INTO temptation, we sin.  Jesus tells us to pray when the bad thoughts and ideas of temptation come into our mind so that we will NOT enter into temptation and sin against Him.  We can pray for the Holy Spirit to help us.  To give us strength to make the choice to not sin.  It’s important to remember that the enemy does not want us to be close to God, he wants us to sin, so he will bring temptation into our minds.  But, just like Jesus, we can choose to speak the word of God and not enter into that temptation and sin.

This brings us to the second thing we need to know: 2) We need to KNOW the TRUTH.  The TRUTH that is in the BIBLE.  The TRUTH that is God’s WORD.  The truth of God will set us free from entering into sin.  When Jesus was in the desert being tempted by the enemy, He used the word of God to overcome the temptation from the enemy.  If you remember back in Matthew 4:1-4, when the enemy tried to get Jesus to turn the stones into bread, Jesus told the enemy, “No!  The scripture says, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”   Our way out of temptation, our escape, is to speak the WORD of God.  The TRUTH that is in the Bible.  We have to KNOW what God’s Word says.  That’s why it is so important that we read the Bible every day and pay close attention to those that are teaching us about God and about what the Bible says.  The Words in the Bible are our escape plan out of temptation and away from sin.

Discussion Questions

  1. Can you think of a time where the enemy was tempting you with something and you prayed and because you prayed you did not sin?  Share/explain.  ***(Share something with your child after they share with you.)
  2. When has there been a time that you were tempted and you prayed the TRUTH of God, you spoke God’s word and did not enter into temptation and sin?  Share/explain.  ***(Share with your child after they share with you.)

Prayer

God, we are so thankful that you don’t, and you will NEVER, tempt us.  We are so thankful that you are a good God and that you love us so very much.  More than we even know.  We are thankful that you provide us a way out of temptation, and that we can always trust in you.  Jesus, we thank you that you promise to be with us and help us endure temptation from the enemy.  We are so thankful that we can KNOW the TRUTH, and that it is our weapon against the enemy when he tries to bring temptation to us to try to cause us to sin.  Holy Spirit we ask you to help us remember this TRUTH that sets us FREE and keeps us free of sin.  Jesus, we pray all of this in your name, amen.

Scripture Memory Verse

“The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.”  1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT)
