POINT #1 – HOW I VIEW MYSELF

READ

“And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.”  Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. – Galatians 4:6-7 NLT

At the very beginning of the Bible we learn that God and Jesus created the world and people.  We learn that God and Jesus wanted to create people to look and be like them.  In Genesis chapter 1 verse 27 it says, Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.  So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

What do you think it means that we are created in the IMAGE of God?  (Allow your child to answer)  The word IMAGE means someone who looks like someone else.  It’s like looking in the mirror.  When we look in the mirror we see what we look like, but we also see what God looks like.  Because we are created in the image of God, we are seeing Him when we look at ourselves and at each other.

The Bible also tells us that Jesus is the Son of God, and Jesus died for us and our sins so that we could be forgiven of our sins and could become children of God.  When we believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for us and rose again, and when we ask Jesus to come live in our hearts, to be our Lord and Savior, we come into the Family of God.  We become children of God, just like Jesus.  It is so important that we know that we belong to God and that we are His sons and daughters here on the earth.

Discussion Questions

  1. Has anyone ever told you that you look like your Mom or your Dad?  How do you look like them?
  2. Has anyone ever told you that you act like your Dad or your Mom?  How do you act like them?
  3. Have you ever thought about what God the Father and Jesus look like?  Have you ever had a dream or a vision or an encounter with them to see them?  Explain.

Scripture Memory Verse

“Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.” – Galatians 4:7 (NLT)

Prayer

God, thank you for creating us.  Thank you for creating us in YOUR image.  Thank you for being such a good Daddy to your children.  We are so blessed that we get to be your children.  Holy Spirit, help us to know what it means to be a child of God, to be a son and/or a daughter of the Most High, One, True, Living God.  Help us to see you inside of us.  Help us to continue discovering who we are, more and more, each and every day.  We love you so much, and we pray all of this in the name of Jesus.  Amen.

Application/Activity

  • Have your child make a list of all the things they like about themselves.  Talk with them about those qualities and how our good qualities come from God!
