PRINT FAMILY STUDY GUIDE

Welcome, Families!

This week we’re going to DIG into the treasure of God’s Word together.

When we open the Bible, we’re not just reading—we’re discovering the truths God placed there on purpose for us to find. Every DIG helps us uncover something special about who God is, who we are, and how we can live the way He intended from the beginning.

Each “DIG” will help your family grow together in God’s Word:

  • Read God’s Word,
  • Reflect on what it means, and
  • Respond in simple, fun ways together.

Get your Bibles out & let’s start digging for treasure!

⛏️ DIG 1 — GOD MADE EVERYTHING ON PURPOSE

READ

Read Genesis 1:1–5 together.

Ask your children & discuss as a family:

  • Who made the world?
  • What did God say?
  • Was what He made good?

Remind them with this simple truth:

“God made everything on purpose, and He made YOU on purpose too.”

REFLECT

Talk with your kids about how God had a plan before anything existed.

Use simple examples:

  • “Did you choose what you look like?”
  • “Did God know exactly how He wanted you to be?”
  • “Do you think God makes mistakes?”

Help them connect:
God’s original plan is always good, and His plan for you is good.

RESPOND — FAMILY ACTIVITY

  1. Let each child say one thing God made that is “GOOD.”
  2. Then have each person say:
    “God made ME good too!”
  3. Draw a picture of something God created “in the beginning.”

⛏️ DIG 2 — GOD MADE US IN HIS IMAGE

READ

Read Genesis 1:26–27.

Teach your kids the simple word meanings:

  • Image = We look like God in our hearts.
  • Likeness = We can love, think, choose, and do right—just like God.

Explain:

“God made people special. Nothing else God made — not the birds, not the dogs, not the stars — is made in His image.”

REFLECT

Ask your children:

  • What does it mean to be like God on the inside?
  • How can we show God’s love?
  • How can we make choices that make God smile?

Help them understand:
Being made in God’s image means we can act like Him — kind, brave, loving, honest, gentle, strong.

RESPOND — FAMILY ACTIVITY

Play “Act Like God.”

Tell your kids:

“Let’s read what God is like, and then act it out!”

Choose one verse at a time, read it together, then act out the matching action.

  • Helping – Psalm 46:1 — “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
    • Act it out: Help someone stand up, carry something heavy, or comfort someone who is sad.
  • ForgivingPsalm 86:5 — “For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive…”
    • Act it out: Pretend someone bumped you or made a mistake—then forgive joyfully.
  • Sharing James 1:17 — “Every good gift… is from above.”
    • Act it out: Share a toy, a snack, or something special.
  • ProtectingPsalm 121:7 — “The LORD shall preserve you from all evil…”
    • Act it out: Pretend to shield a family member from pretend rain or danger.
  • Being kindEphesians 4:32 — “Be kind to one another…”
    • Act it out: Show kindness with a hug, smile, gentle pat, or helpful action.

Then say together:

“God made us to be like Him!”

⛏️ DIG 3 — GOD GAVE US A JOB: SUBDUE & HAVE DOMINION

READ

Read Genesis 1:28.

Keep definitions simple:

  • Subdue = clean up a mess or fix what is broken
  • Have dominion = take care of things God gives us

Explain:

“God told us to take care of the world — to make wrong things right and messy things better.”

REFLECT

Ask:

  • What are things God trusts us to take care of?
(toys, rooms, pets, friends, choices, attitudes, one another)
  • What are some things that we saw today that wasn’t right or needed fixing? (toys left out, a sibling being ignored, a pet without water, not obeying my mom or dad, someone carrying something too heavy)
  • When something is wrong, do we ignore it or help fix it?

Help them see:
God made us helpers in His world — not just watchers, but fixers and helpers.

RESPOND — FAMILY ACTIVITY

Do a quick “dominion moment”:

Pick one small thing to fix or clean together
— a small mess, toys on the floor, dishes on the counter, a moment of apology/forgiveness for a bad attitude.

Say together while you work:

“We’re helping the world look like God made it to look.”

⛏️ DIG 4 — GOD MADE US TO NEED EACH OTHER

READ

Read Genesis 2:18–25.

Explain definitions simply:

  • Helper (ʿêzer) = someone God gives to help you do your best
  • Comparable (neged) = someone who fits with you
  • Joined (dâbaq) = stuck together in love like glue

Say:  “God made people to work together, help each other, love each other, and not be alone.”

REFLECT

Ask:

  • Who are people that help you?
  • Who are people you help?
  • What do you like about how your family “fits together”?

Help kids see:
God made every family member important and needed.

RESPOND — FAMILY ACTIVITY

Tell your kids:

“God made our family to fit together and help each other.”

Take turns going around the family circle and have each person share:

  1. One thing they are good at
(Example: “I’m good at helping,” “I’m good at building,” “I’m good at encouraging.”)
  2. One way someone else in the family helps them
(Example: “Mom helps me when I’m stuck,” “My sister helps me clean,” “Dad helps me feel brave.”)

After everyone has shared, say together:

“God made our family to work together!”

🌟 WEEKLY FAMILY PRACTICE

Choose one of these to do each day this week:

1. Speak God’s Truth

Say together:
“God made me on purpose, with purpose, and for His purpose.”

2. Fix Something Small

Pick one small thing in your home to clean or fix — and say:
“This is what dominion looks like.”

3. Thank Each Other

Each night, thank one family member for how they helped you that day.

4. Read a Verse Before Bed

Rotate between Genesis 1–2 verses (short ones).
Ask: “What does this tell us about what God wanted in the beginning?”
