Oil Lamps In The Bible

The Lord is the true Lamp! – “You are my lamp, O LORD; the LORD turns my darkness into light.” 2Sa 22:29 

The Word of God is a lamp – “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105 

Human life is likened to a lamp – “he light of the righteous rejoices, But the lamp of the wicked goes out.” Pro 13:9 

Believers are specifically said to be a lamp – “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; (15) nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. (16) “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Mat 5:14-16 

Bible prophecy is a lamp – “So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.” 2Pet 1:19 

Jesus is the ultimate lamp in the age to come – “And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.” Rev 21:23 

“There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.” Rev 22:5
